Apple's Knowledge Navigator concept actually started in the mid-late 1980s. It was in Scully's 1987 book, and Apple produced a few videos about the same time as the book. Newton was one of the products developed based on the concept. Another project was spun out into a separate company, General Magic, which produced the software for a few devices (Sony had several, Motorola produced one with a cellular data modem) before it was absorbed into Microsoft.
