Anyone who thinks Amazon will just merely out muscle the publishers should look back to Apple's own history. Yes, Apple dominates the landscape for music and TV show sales, but witness what happened:
- Amazon got the rights to sell MP3 without DRM before Apple did, and at a price that Apple couldn't initially match.
- Apple lost NBC TV Shows for quite some time, yet Amazon retained them. When NBC came back, it was with permission to have variable pricing on TV shows, which Apple was adamantly opposed to.
Now the tables are turned. Amazon is the industry leader in a segment (eBooks). Don't think they won't turn to Apple to help level the playing field.
