Sony on color eReaders, entrance to Japanese market: not yet!

In an interview with Tech-On!, Fujio Noguchi who serves as Sony's Deputy President of the Digital Reading Business Division gave some great insight into Sony's eReader direction:

  • Sales have been brisk, he even seemed (oddly) proud that their servers went down on Christmas day due to high volume.
  • The Reader Touch Edition, their mid-range model has been their best seller.
  • They are constantly looking at color Readers, but don't feel the technology is there yet. They are adamant on sticking with electronic paper over LCD or OLED screens.
  • No current plans to develop their own paper product - they remain partnered with Vizplex.
  • Reader's sold in 8 countries - he doesn't feel the Japanese market has enough content yet to warrant the release there.
