GQ's "Men of the Year" magazine issue (December 2009) sold 6,641 times on the iPhone App Store. January's edition has sold over 12,000 copies, according to Conde Nest in an article at The Business Insider.
While that's a drop in the bucket, compared to the over 907,000 readers between newsstand and subscribers, it's not bad for an app looking for recognition in the app store, surrounded by thousands of unrelated apps.
Conde Nest is going to start giving $1 discounts to repeat buyers of their magazine apps and is evaluating subscriptions.
I would imagine an Apple tablet could help boost sales significantly. For starters, the assumption is there would be a magazine area, rather than lopping the apps in with unrelated other content. In addition, a full tablet is clearly a superior way to read a magazine as compared to a tiny mobile phone screen (high resolution or not).
