New York Times set to resume charging for web site access?

New York magazine reports on news that NY Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger, Jr. being close to announcing the return of the NY Times pay site.

While nothing is official, the article cites unnamed sources close to Sulzberger. It seems fairly clear that they're at least considering the measure, since rather than saying "no", Times spokesperson Diane McNulty is quoted as saying:

We'll announce a decision when we believe that we have crafted the best possible business approach. No details till then.
The article mentions a rumor that Apple will strike a content deal to make the Times available to users of the new tablet they are expected to announce soon. That would fit with the idea of charging for some content. What the article doesn't mention is where that would leave things like the NY Times apps for iPhone and Palm Pre users (currently free).
