As eReaders with handwriting recognition start to hit the market (and as Apple apparently readies a tablet salvo at the industry), it's interesting to consider the fastest way to get text into a portable device.
Well, Phil Gyford has done just that. He pitted pen-and-paper, a regular keyboard, the Apple Newton's handwriting technology from over a decade ago, Palm's long-forgotten Graffiti input mechanism, the keyboard from a Palm Treo 650 (5+ years old) and the current keyboard in an iPhone.
My takeaway: If you can type that fast on an iPhone, then a physical keyboard can't possibly be needed on a large 8-11" tablet with a much larger soft keyboard.
